The pine trees in Mountain Province

SABANGAN—The pine trees in Mountain Province are being tapped  for oil to produce disinfectants, pain and stress relievers, perfumes and insecticides.
The Kalawitan Agro-forestry Integrated Livelihood Information Group in Barangay Losad wants the ubiquitous species on highland fauna to be an economic driver for communities.
Telesforo Gut-omen, KAFILIG president, said the Department of Science and Technology has supported the project through a training program on the system of extraction.
“What are freely scattered in our surroundings can serve as source of income,” he told Manila Standard, adding that cones, twigs and needles are turned into decorations.
Research showed that a kilo of pine tree needles can produce about 1.2 ML of pure oil which can also be extracted from nuts or seeds and cones.
Gut-omen said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources would oversee the project to ensure the continued growth of pine trees which make up 60 percent of the forest cover of the province.
“Our group wants to increase our market for pine-based products so that we will be able to sustain the living condition of our families and contribute to the efforts to preserve and protect our environment where we get our raw materials.”
He said financing  is needed to acquire equipment to expand oil processing to full-scale production.
